Model profile

Model history and generations

Model history: years and generations

The hybrid RX lineage began with the RX 400h (chassis XU30) from 2005 to 2008, the first luxury hybrid SUV of its kind. The third generation brought the RX 450h (AL10, 2009–2015), which is the volume used car today, followed by the fourth-generation RX 450h (AL20, 2015–2022) with its bolder spindle-grille styling and improved cabin technology.

Powertrain and equipment

Engines, drivetrain and trims

Engines, transmissions and drive

The classic RX hybrid formula pairs a smooth petrol V6 with electric motors through an e-CVT.

Equipment lines and body styles

The RX Hybrid is a five-door, five-seat luxury crossover (a longer three-row RXL existed for a period on the AL20).

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

The US used market

Availability is excellent and geographically broad. Typical import candidates are 2013–2020 RX 450h cars with 40,000 to 110,000 miles, many with full Lexus service histories. Because Lexus owners tend to maintain their cars, condition is often above the segment average. The hybrid battery has an excellent longevity reputation, but a documented history and a battery health check remain worthwhile.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Common issues buyers should know

The RX Hybrid is one of the most dependable vehicles in its class, but it is not maintenance-free. The traction battery is long-lived, yet a health check is prudent on higher-mileage cars, and the separate hybrid cooling system deserves attention.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

Differences from the European version

US RX hybrids run DOT/SAE headlights, lack a rear fog lamp, use MPH clusters and are set to US navigation and radio bands. Equipment packaging differs from European trims.

Modifications and single-vehicle approval

Typical approval work includes fitting a rear fog lamp, adjusting or replacing headlights to ECE specification, checking indicator and marker configuration, and correcting the speedometer/odometer data for the German papers.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Is a used Lexus RX Hybrid worth importing from the USA?

Yes for many buyers — supply is deep, cars are typically well maintained, and the reliability and comfort are class-leading.

How long does the hybrid battery last?

The RX hybrid battery is known for long life, frequently well beyond 150,000 miles. A health check on higher-mileage cars is still sensible.

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

How is import VAT treated when importing a Lexus RX Hybrid?

Import VAT and other taxes or costs are assessed separately under the applicable rules and the circumstances of the individual case. A blanket answer for every vehicle would not be reliable.

What are the common Lexus RX Hybrid problems?

Water-pump wear, hybrid and inverter cooling components, a weak 12-volt battery causing no-starts, and dated infotainment on older cars.

Is all-wheel drive available?

Yes — the RX hybrid uses a rear electric motor for AWD, and both FWD and AWD cars are common in the US.

Can a US RX Hybrid be registered in Germany?

Yes, via TÜV individual approval with lighting changes and documentation work.

How long does the import take?

Typically several weeks from purchase to registration, mainly driven by shipping and customs clearance.
